Leadship Training is an important part of the success of a Cub Scout Pack. It prepares the leader with ways to enhance the program at the Den and Pack level, and helps all of the leaders to provide a Quality Program.

Brand new leaders will benefit from the Fast Start Training available online through our Council website. But the Fast Start program is only a general introduction to Scouting. More formalized training should follow.

For more formalized training, there are two basic courses for Scout Leaders. Completion of these two courses earns the leader the the "Trained" patch that is shown to the right.

Additional Training is available for leaders that want to have more insight into Scouting. Below is a list of some of the training that is available through Boy Scouts of America.

Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO)
This training provides hands-on learning experience designed to give leaders the techniques they need to plan and conduct pack overnight camping. [NOTE: Scouting requires at least one Cub Scout Leader be Baloo Trained in order for a pack to participate in an overnight outing.]

Outdoor Leader Skills for Webelos Leaders (OWL)
Designed specifically for Webelos den leaders and their assistants, the Outdoor Leader Skills for Webelos Leaders course teaches outdoor-related skills through demonstration and hands-on practice. Webelos den leaders should attend this training before conducting Webelos overnight camping with the boys and parents of the den. In addition to covering basic camping skills, this training features planning campouts and finding resources.

Round Table Meetings
Roundtables are held monthly for the purpose of giving adult leaders the skills and ideas they need to deliver an exciting Cub Scout program to the boys. The roundtable serves also to renew each leaders enthusiasm and dedication. Each roundtable features information and training sessions as well as ideas for ceremonies, games and activities for den and pack meeting. Often these ideas for Pack and Den activities are built around the next months theme or upcoming district or council events.

Scouting University
Scouting University is a day long carnival of action, activities and program ideas. This supplemental training is usually conducted at the District level annually in November. Topics included crafts, cooking, behavior, advancements, program ideas and other areas which help in conducting den and pack meetings.

Woodbadge for the 21st Century
Wood Badge is a multiple-weekend group training course designed to provide adults with advanced leadership skills and a more dedicated involvement in Scouting. Prerequisites for the course include Fast Start Training, New Leader Essentials, and Job Specific Training. It is also recommended that each attendee complete Outdoor Leader Fundamentals prior to attendance. Typically Wood Badge is offerred once per year in the area.

The next Woodbadge Session is in 2008 on August 15, 16 & 17th and September 26, 27 & 28th. Registration is being accepted NOW at Rainbow Council.

Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (Boy Scout training)
This training provides essential outdoor skills scout leaders to pass on to their scouts, as well as knowledge on planning, conducting, and leading overnight campouts. It is similar to Baloo training, but is much more in depth. Typically, this training runs from Friday night to Sunday morning at Council, and the Baloo training is held in conjuction during the Saturday portion. They share some classes, but are two distinct training sessions. While it is not a requirement for Cub Scouting, it is an advanced course of outdoor skills from which a a leader can benefit.

TRAINING SCHEDULE

Our District and Council are constantly striving to provide opportunities for their leaders to obtain training. The first, best source for a training schedule is on our district's website.

While training is ideally done in Council (you'll be with local people trained by people you'll see at Scouting events), it is not required for you to complete your training in Rainbow Council. All other local area BSA Councils provide training. On that same schedule, our district included training gathered for the Des Plaines Valley Council (which serves the area around Countryside, Lemont, etc.), the Three Fires Council (which serves the Fox Valley area, including Naperville and Aurora) and the Calumet Council to our east.. If you are going to get training outside of Rainbow Council, check with the Kelly Markwell to make sure that you have all of the information necessary, and to make sure you will get everything you need to receive credit.

For more information, contact the Rainbow Council Office at (815) 942-4450 or the District Training Chair Kelly Markwell.
